Rep. Lujan Grisham Calls on NM VA to Implement Inspector General's Recommendations for Surgical Procedures

Statement

Date: Nov. 2, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) sent a letter to New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) Director Andrew Welch in response to a VA Office of Inspector General (OIG) investigation which found that the VA had to delay surgical procedures due to a lack of sterile instruments and equipment. Rep. Lujan Grisham urges Director Welch to immediately implement all of the OIG's recommendations to fix the problem.

"These issues pose potentially serious health risks to patients that depend on your care and undermine the VA's ability to identify and address health care quality issues. We have an obligation to veterans who have sacrificed for our country and the VA must improve in order to fully uphold that promise. I will continue to advocate on behalf of veterans and their families in order to ensure that the NMVAHCS provides the highest quality of healthcare to its patients," wrote Rep. Lujan Grisham.
